Our dogs have an embarrassing problem. Something I don’t like to talk about, but we can’t ignore it any longer.
They both eat their poop. The clinical name for the problem is coprophagia. Wikipedia has an extensive article on it along with a long list of speculative causes.
We found we had three choices:
- Accept it (not acceptable because the have horrible breath)
- Follow them around the yard and pick up after them (not something I care to do)
- Give them medication that makes their poop taste bad to them (taking it from disgusting to horrible?)
So we went to Petco and bought some medication. We also got some breath freshener dog treats and, since the Christmas-theme dog toys were on sale for 50 percent off, we bought one for them.
Since Ruthie is the Alpha dog, she snatched it up and ripped the stuffing out of it, giving Pete menacing glances. After all, she owns all of the toys, treats and food.

My horse went through a phase when he did this. THANKFULLY it was just a phase. Hope the meds work. ick.
