Good news for Gracie

graciepups03 This is Gracie, a border collie who ended up at the Jonesboro Animal Shelter.

Due to space limitations, Gracie was going to be “put down” by lethal injection. But when they put her on the table for the procedure, she stressed out and went into labor, giving birth to five puppies.

The shelter people didn’t have the heart to end her life and the lives of her pups, so they were spared. That was a few weeks ago.

We found out about Gracie and her pups last week when one of the Sun’s reporters was working on a series on the shelter. Maria and I are, as you may know, kinda nuts about dogs and went with Austin to the shelter last Saturday to photograph the inmates, including Gracie and her new family. We’ve been hoping that the exposure will result in a home for Gracie, her pups and many other dogs there.

We learned this morning that Gracie has found a foster home at a local nursing home and one of her pups has been adopted.

Thank God for dog people.
