High in Arkansas

mmUS We decided to get high this weekend – as high as you can get in Arkansas.

We’re attending the Associated Press Managing Editors meeting at Mount Magazine State Park, the highest point in the state. According to the park logo, that means 2,753 feet above sea level. I’m sure this impresses Tim and Linda Balough who live at 10,600 feet in Alma, Colo.MtMagLogoLargeBlack

We drove over this morning from Brookland – about 240 miles, only 13 of which were Interstate highway. The whole trip was accomplished in constant, sometimes torrential, rain and arrived in time for lunch.

The Lodge is perched on a cliff overlooking a valley far below. They do hang gliding launches just down the road. Thanks to the weather, we’re in or above the clouds, depending on how the wind blows. Every now and then we can see the valley through a hole in the clouds. The pictures on the park web site look pretty spectacular and I’ll bet this place is very impressive when the skies are clear and sunny.

Lunch ended at 2 p.m. and now we’re waiting until we can check in to our room at 4. We have no cell phone coverage here, but they do have high-speed internet – Ethernet and Wifi. That’s why we brought both laptops.

In the meantime, we can hear the thunder rumbling. There is a nasty band of rain extending as far west as Tulsa, so we may get to drive home in the rain too.
