This is the pin from the 1998 BMW MOA rally in Missoula, Mont. It was the second such rally in Missoula, the first being in 1984. There have been two other repeat venues for the ‘MOA rally – Oshkosh, Wis. (1976, 1993) and Redmond, Ore. (2001, 2010).
That was the year Montana decided to drop its interstate speed limit in favor of “reasonable and prudent” speeds. Consequently, I spent several hours cruising at 100 mph and above on I-90, but still got passed by several other BMW riders en route to the rally.
I rode on to Portland to visit my son Sean after the rally, picking up a speeding ticket in the Palouse region of eastern Washington.
