The father of motorcycle safety in the United States has died.
Hugh “Harry” Hurt, 81, died Nov. 29 of complications from back surgery.
Hurt authored the first definitive study on motorcycle accidents in 1981 after a two-year University of Southern California study of more than 900 motorcycle accidents.
The Hurt Report is recognized as the most comprehensive motorcycle safety study of the 20th century. The report’s findings led to improvements in rider training and protective gear.
Had it not been for the Hurt Report, there very well may never have been a Motorcycle Safety Foundation and its rider education program. Hurt’s legacy is millions of avoided deaths and injuries. I, very likely, would not have survived my 30 years of motorcycling were it not for Harry Hurt and his profound influence on the sport.
