Maria worked late last night and got home about midnight.
The first indication I got that she was home was her calling excitedly for me to come to the garage with a camera.
She noticed a big-ass spider near the garage door as she walked from her car and wanted a photo for positive identification. Well, here it is. It was about 3" from end to end.
We think it's a Trapdoor spider. The males wander around at night in July and August looking for mates, so this almost certainly was one of those amorous males.
The University of Arkansas Arthropod Museum web site says they can fang you but can't hurt you with venom.
They're no match for a size 11 hiking boot, either.
