Stein of the Day

roundel

This half-liter stein sports the BMW roundel.

There are a couple of explanations for the roundel design. The most plausible is that it references the blue-and-white checker design seen on the coat of arms of the German state of Bavaria (see yesterday’s Stein of the Day).

The other is a widely held belief that the blue and white element stems from BMW’s original business of building aircraft engines. It approximates what the pilot of an open cockpit World War I biplane would have seen looking through the arc of the two-bladed propeller.

I’ve accumulated three of these steins.
