Autofocus on point-and-shoot digital cameras usually locks onto whatever is closest to the center of the frame.
So if you set your camera on a rock and use the self-timer to shoot a picture of you and your wife on the short of a mountain lake and a squirrel pops up at the last second, this is what you get.
