Mother’s Day thoughts

jadeidcar

This is my mother with her younger brother John Dietz, probably in 1938 or 1939 on their farm in Carroll County, Indiana.

Mom was a nursing student at Indiana University in Indianapolis. Her brother died in the autumn of 1939 of head injuries suffered in a horseback riding accident. Her mother died about the same time.

So this photo was shot a few weeks or months before a big part of her world collapsed.

But she was game and became the first person in her family to get a college education. She stayed home with me for much of my childhood while dad’s insurance agency and real estate business paid the bills.

She worked for a year or so in a hospital, then spent the rest of her working life as a nurse in a local doctor’s office.

She was a wonderful mother and I miss her every day, especially on Mother’s Day.
